Guard Your Heart
Proverbs 4:23, “Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.”
It seems that every day I hear of another Christian marriage dissolving, some one else who has been trapped in sin, some one who has given up, decided the Lord’s ways are too high, too demanding. These are times of shaking. The devil is furious because he knows his time is short. It is a time to guard our hearts.
Shortly before Jesus’ arrest he told his disciples that “the prince of this world is coming. He has no hold on me.” (John 1430) In other words, “I have left him no hook where he can hook me. There is nothing in me that belongs to him.” Paul warned the Ephesian believers not to “give the devil a foothold (4:27).” Later in the same letter he said, “Among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people...Be very careful how you live.” (5:3,15)
One of our Belmont sisters here in Nashville says, “Sin always takes you further than you intend to go, you pay more than you intend to pay and you stay longer than you intend to stay.”
We cannot allow any fog, any shadow of sin to remain in us. We must walk in light. If we allow the enemy a beachhead he will take more ground. No second looks. No five minute excursion into lust. No momentary wallowing in selfishness. No harbored unforgiveness or bitterness.
Implore the Holy Spirit to keep you on a short leash. Confess sins. Forgive. Be filled with his Spirit. Guard your heart. Then have no fear!
Blessings to all of you. Don Finto
